What’s in my Gym Bag?

My gym bag has been a lifesaver on many occasions, and I wouldn’t know how to live without it. It’s like having your own nightstand and wardrobe always packed and ready to go. When I was just starting, I thought that a bottle of water and a small towel was all I needed in the gym, but boy was I wrong! As time passed and my schedules changed, I have learned to balance friends, family, work, and the gym, and a neatly packed gym bag is what helps me through a busy day.

Bottle of water

There is no way to go through a serious practice without a bottle of water. You can dehydrate and even faint, and a small break for a sip of water can make your workout a lot easier. Gyms almost always have fridges or vending machines where they sell water, energy drinks, or juices,  but I like having my own water bottle at hand; it’s much more convenient and much less expensive.

Gym shoes

You should know that gyms are very clean, and remember that all over that floor people will be kneeling and lying down to do pushups and work on their abs, and it’s not pleasant to think that they will put their hands where you have walked in your dirty shoes and sneakers. Always have a nice clean pair of gym shoes (sneakers) which you will use only for workouts. Wash them regularly and make sure they are comfy and just the right size.

Locker room essentials

Sometimes you will pack and head home to shower in the peace and serenity of your own bathroom, but there will be times when you will not have the time to do so. This is why you should always have a clean towel, deodorant, shampoo, body wash, and soap packed in your gym bag. One time I was two hours late for a night out with my friends because I forgot my ‘locker room essentials’ and had to head home to shower. Needless to say that I keep all that in my gym bag from that very night.

Proteins and vitamins

I have to eat something within an hour from my workout, and sadly, I am not always able to run home and cook a nice meal, so I make sure I have a little something in my bag. A couple of kc bars for protein, two apples for vitamins, and a small pack of peanuts because I love peanuts. If I don’t eat after my workout, I get a headache, feel a bit lightheaded, and regularly get nervous and moody, so I have my ‘first aid kit’ in the form of a few healthy snacks and I’m good to go.

Spare clothes

Because of the crazy work hours I have, I don’t always manage to get home and change into something comfy before I hit the gym. This is why I always have spare clothes in my bag: workout pants, a spare shirt, and clean socks. Sometimes I get to the gym in sweats and don’t have to change before I start, but it happens that I have to shower and rush off to meet a friend afterwards, so clean clothes are always handy. Also, it’s a good idea to have a plastic bag for your dirty clothes, so that your gym bag can stay free of smell of sweat.

Living an active life means you are always on the go, and sometimes I think about how overcrowded my schedule is. However, I wouldn’t like it if it was any other way, I love the adrenaline, the rush, and the fact that I have a chance to work, go to the gym, and meet my friends.
